A broadside advertisement for A Guide. . .Gold Region By James Redpath & Richard J. Hinton, of Kansas. With Maps. Published by J.H. Colton, No. 172 William Street, New York. Booth, Job Printer, 109 Nassau Street, N.Y. During the period of 1858-1860, several guides were written covering the eastern portion of Kansas Territory and the Rocky Mountain region, primarily to be used by potential miners or settlers. While the piece is not dated, both the printer (Smith, Samuel) and the publisher (Colton, J.H.) are listed in Trows New York City Directory in 1861, under the addresses noted (Nassau Street was listed as a "former" address for Smith). The lack of detail in the printer's signature suggest that this piece may not have been printed during the original 1858-60 period. The authors, Redpath and Hinton, were two "Free State"' men who gained a certain amount of fame in the Kansas territory by editing the guidebook, published in New York in 1859. The publisher, J.H. Colton, was a major force in map publishing from 1831 and 1890, and was thought to produce some of the finest atlases in the U.S. during the 19th century. The company was founded by Joseph Hutchins Colton, and by the 1850s Colton published guidebooks, atlases and immigrant and railroad maps. Renamed G.W. & C.B. Colton in the 1860s after Colton was succeeded by his sons, George Woolworth Colton and Charles B. Colton [Ref: georgeglazer.com]. Measures 11" x 16". Most likely this is a Dr. Nollie Mummie reprint as he did a set of 400 in this series. Thus, the date on this item might be later than the dates listed above. However, for the collector, this item is a rarity indeed. -48838
