A Group of Awards for Blackie, John Wayne's Dachshund, 1958.... (Total: 2 Items)
A Group of Awards for "Blackie," John Wayne's Dachshund, 1958. Including: five certificates, all presented to "Blackie" from The American Humane Association, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, The Quaker Oats Company (their Ken-L-Ration Award), The Richmond Dog Fanciers Club, and WSB Radio of Atlanta, Georgia. Also included are two medals; one from the ASPCA and one from Ken-L-Ration (both engraved "Blackie"); a group of correspondence related to "Blackie's" awards; and four black and white photographs depicting Pilar Wayne and "Blackie" receiving the certificate from The American Humane Association.Various Sizes"Blackie" was honored with all these awards for his act of heroism when, in January 1958 at 3:00 AM, he started barking uncontrollably, alerting Pilar Wayne that the Encino house was on fire. Thankfully, Pilar, baby Aissa, and "Blackie" were able to escape in what was surely a traumatic experience, especially because John Wayne was thousands of miles away on location in Japan.
