Apulia, Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Ca. 330-300 BC. Tall, black-glazed jug of elegant form with wide body and delicate rim; stands on raised base, has twin bands that go around center, a flower bud pattern is located above the twin bands, neck decorated with a painted branch. The spout slowly curves down into the interior of vase, like a syphon. Handle is attached from top of body to lip. Gnathia ware is so named as it was first found at the Apulian site of Egnathia. The black glaze ware is often decorated with red, white, or yellow floral motifs. 7-7/8"T. Intact/generally excellent, save chip to bottom of rim.
