A Great Northern Railway oval brass TENDERPLATE "773". As carried by the 2700 gallons 5 tons of coal tender built for the GNR Stirling 8'1" 4-2-2 No. 773 built at Doncaster as Works No. 393 in August 1885. It was withdrawn in original condition in December 1903. Stirling Singles are known to have exchanged tenders with other classes so some were still in normal service into the 1950's! Some became sludge-carriers and survived even longer, hence the fact that such early tenderplates are still around. Oval, 5"x3", unrestored and rather battered but it is 107 years old! This plate has serif numerals; the later LNER versions had non-serif numerals. Tony Peart remarks that there are not many bits still around from Stirling 8-footers!
