A Grasslands Kingdom (Cameroon)Helmet Mask
A Grasslands Kingdom (Cameroon)
Helmet Mask
Wood, pigment, cloth
Height: 19 ½ inches Width: 12 ¾ inches Depth: 11 5/8 inches

This well carved mask has a fan-shaped headdress above the wide brow, very large semi-circular tab ears, and the usual magnified sizes of facial features. A vertical line beginning on the headdress continues down the forehead to the tip of the nose. There is a rich patina of use and traces of both red and white pigment.
There is a loss where the proper left eye meets the nose, along with four holes, two at top and two at back, on the proper left of the headdress. A large loss is in back center of the head between the bottom of the headdress and the neck swelling. An opening in top center 3 ½ by 4 inches for addition of feathers has chipped and worn edges. There are surface insect losses on the proper left top and back of the headdress. The pigment on the face is largely chipped away.

Provenance: H.
