A George III silver goblet, probably by Thomas Johnson, London 1814, the plain bowl with moulded edge raised on an octagonal foot decorated with a reeded band, the bowl inscribed 'Oulton Water Frolic 1814', 16.75cm, 8oz *"Water Frolics" were the forerunners of today's Broadland yachting regattas, they were well established by the early 19th century but by the start of the 20th century the name had fallen into disuse in favour of the term "regatta". The boats were rarely if ever sailed by their gentleman owners, as this was invariably the preserve of paid hands who instinctively knew every quirk of the course and were highly skilled in their art as they sailed the same craft most every day of their working lives. (Mike Barnes, Norfolk Broads Yachting Co) £200-250
