Gandhara, Pakistan, ca. 3rd to 1st Century BCE. Toilet-tray in grey-green schist, carved on the interior upper surface with a seated dragon on its face. Plates like this were used to hold makeup for women, in a similar way a color palette is used by painters to hold colors while painting. Fortunately this Gandharan version is also aesthetically beautiful for the modern audience, allowing us to enjoy the costmetic plate without the cosmetics! These palettes represent a reinterpretation of classic Indo-Greek Culture after Alexander the Great's conquest of India. 5-3/4"D. Chip on bottom as shown, else excellent.
