A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF A YOUNG WOMAN SIGNED G. VAN DER STRAETEN
A gilt bronze figure of a young woman signed G. Van der Straeten (Georges Van der Straeten, Belgian, 1856–1928).This charming figural sculpture depicts a shy young woman in a bonnet and full crinoline dress, rendered in cold-painted and patinated bronze with a carved ivory face and hands. The girl stands in a demure pose, her hands clasped in front, her expression warm and slightly bashful, with her head tilted to the side and an engaging smile on her finely detailed ivory face. Her period costume is meticulously modeled, the drapery of her tiered dress richly textured and highlighted with reddish-golden patination that enhances the visual depth and realism of the piece. The figure is affixed to an octagonal onyx base with striking red and green veining, bearing the incised signature Van der Straeten to the front and an impressed foundry seal to the underside, likely of the Société des Bronzes de Paris (though the impression is partially worn). Additional casting and edition numbers are visible inside the skirt.Van der Straeten was a celebrated sculptor of the Belle Époque, known for his refined bronze figures of fashionable women, often incorporating ivory details and capturing expressions of gentle emotion and wit. This piece is representative of his best-known style: a blend of elegance and character, with a keen attention to facial expression and posture.France, late 19th to early 20th century. Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold "as-is", refer to our T&C.Helios Auctions does not ship in-house.
