A GEORGE II GILTWOOD GIRANDOLE Circa 1745 The shield-shaped plate within a conforming frame with gadrooned sight edge and sanded flat section with trailing flowers, surmounted by a fruit and flower-filled basket, the top corners acanthus-sheathed, the bottom centered by a mustached mask with acanthus head dress and pleated shell collar, flanked by scrolled acanthus, bearing a trade label: CARVER, GILDER,/Upholsterer, Cabinet and Chair Maker,/48, LONDON STREET, NORWICH./Artists' Colourman./The Best House for FIRST-CLASS FURNITURE,/LOOKING GLASSES, PAPER HANGINGS, &c./Old Furniture Re-covered, Repaired, or Cleaned 51 X 281/2 in. 130 X 72 cm - $10,000-15,000 Provenance Christie's London, 9 July 1998, lot 7, The inspiration for this looking glass can be traced to the designs of both Daniel Marot (1661-1752) and Mathias Lock (circa 1710-69). The use of symmetrical ovolo-shaped frames and the incorporation of masks can clearly be seen in Marot's 'Nouveau Livre d'Ornements', 1703 and 1713. Mathias Lock played a leading part in the introduction of the Rococo style into England and used carved masks and busts as a feature of his designs - Six Sconces, 1744.
