A FRENCH, FIRST EMPIRE BRONZE-MOUNTED GLASS CENTERPIECE
An elegant French First Empire centerpiece comprising a finely cast gilt bronze ormolu frame and cut-glass liner. With an oval body with twin upward-scrolling handles, raised on a low foot with acanthus-leaf and gadrooned decoration. The openwork bronze mount features symmetrical swan motifs on either side, flanking a classical urn with scrolling foliage. The swans, with outstretched wings and elongated necks, are emblematic of the Empire style, symbolizing grace and imperial grandeur. The handles are adorned with delicate acanthus and foliate patterns, while the foot carries a row of stylized palmettes and leaf borders. The insert is of clear-cut glass, shaped to fit the mount precisely, with a scalloped rim and faceted vertical panels, adding brilliance and texture to the composition. This centerpiece reflects the refined neoclassicism of the French First Empire period, influenced by the art and architecture of ancient Rome and Greece. Typical of the era are the use of symbolic animals such as swans, urns, and strict symmetrical designs combined with high-quality gilt metalwork.Originally intended as a table centerpiece, likely for fruit, flowers, or as a decorative jardinière.French First Empire Gilt Bronze and Cut-Glass Centerpiece, circa 1805–1820.Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold "as-is", refer to our T&C.Helios Auctions does not ship in-house.
