A FIRST EDITION OF "NOVEMBER BOUGHS", BY WALT WHITMAN

David McKay, Philadelphia, 1888. One of 400 copies printed. Large paper, 8vo. Portrait of Elias Hicks in text. Pp. 140, Original green cloth stamped in gilt, top page edges gilt. BAL 21430, Myerson A12.1. A very good copy of one of Whitman`s final projects, a collection of short essays and newspaper pieces he wished saved from oblivion, and two pieces which were incorporated into the final/definitive edition of Leaves of Grass: "Sands at Seventy" and his autobiographical summary "A Backwards Glance O`er Travel`d Roads", which appeared as annexes to "Leaves". Among the essays collected here are Whitman`s literary criticism (The Bible as Poetry; Shakespeare`s Historical Plays; Robert Burns; Tennyson; Slang in America; on Late English Books; and George Fox and Shakespeare), and some topical pieces (An Indian Bureau Reminiscence, Some War Memoranda, Abraham Lincoln). Whitman`s friend Horace Traubel wrote of this book, "This edn (sic) of N. B. bound in green was designed by W.W. for his friends, not for the market, + was never anywhere put on sale." Lacking dust jacket. Very slight wear to spine edges and tips of corners.
