Rajput work, a large example formed of thick hide in circular, slightly domed form and lacquered black overall. With four chiseled and gilt bosses, each set with a garnet. With portraits of Hindu deities overall, expertly rendered, primarily in gold leaf with additional pigments. Surya, the Sun God is depicted at the center, surrounded by nine goddesses (including one with the head of a wild boar,) riding various animals (and a man) and wielding numerous weapons in their multiple arms. The geometrical border executed in red, green and gold. The reverse with original velvet pad, cushion and grips, and remains of a collection tag. Late 18th century. Light wear, some peeling to lacquer surface, possible restorations. Diameter 56.8 cm.
