A FINE GANSU YANGSHAO NEOLITHIC STORAGE JAR, c.3rd Mill. BC, the ceramic vessel of ovoid form flanked by two lug grip projections, decorated with polychrome mineral earth pigments, China, 36x41cm
ProvenanceFrom an Australian collection Note: For a similar example cf.; Sotheby#s London 26 February 2002, David Sylvester: The Private Collection, Sale No. LO2959, Lot 37 Reference: The Majiayao culture (c. 3800 - 2000 BCE) existed in the upper regions of the yellow river, present day Gansu and Qinghai provinces in China. The Banshan is the penultimate phase of the Majiayao. Large two-handled storage jars with narrow bases and wide girth are typical of Banshan culture...The surface decoration consists of black and red mineral pigments...a serrated pattern running between the red and black portions of the design is typical of Banshan ware (White and Otsuka 1993, p24). For further information cf.; White J.M and Otsuka R.Y. 1993, Pathways to the Afterlife: Early Chinese Art from the Sze Hong Collection, Denver Art Museum in association with University of Hawaii Press
