A Dionysus Figure with Child Satyr
Marble
Approx. 82 inches in height, 27 inches in width, 23 inches in depth

This monumental nude male figure of Dionysus is magnificently carved with bunches of grapes and grape leaves crowning his head and a figure of a child satyr at his side. In one hand he holds aloft a kylix, undoubtedly filled with wine, and in the other, a draping animal skin. The child satyr beside him is holding two bunches of grapes.

Dionysus is also known as Bacchus, and the frenzy he produces is known as bakcheia. Bacchus is known as the Liberator, freeing one from one's normal self, by madness, ecstasy, or wine. His divine mission was to mingle the music of the flute and to bring an end to worry and care. Child satyrs are mythological creatures related to the satyr; they are commonly paired, like this example, with a Bacchananalian/Dionysian figure.

Provenance:
From the Collection of Lamar Hunt, Dallas.

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
