A Delightful Relic of Custer's Last Stand. A Horseshoe Found on the Battlefield Where Custer and His Men Perished under the Swarming Sioux. Custer was one of the most celebrated, and controversial, Civil War figures. Graduating last in his 1861 West Point class, he built a reputation for daring and brilliance, and in 1863 became a brigadier general. Until the end of the war, Custer fought with the utmost distinction in all the cavalry battles of the Army of the Potomac. He commanded a division in the Shenandoah and cut off Lee's escape at Appomatox. After the war he remained in the army fighting Indians and died at Little Big Horn. A rare relic recovered from the site of Custer's "Last Stand" on the Little Big Horn, an iron horse shoe with one nail, attached to a linen backing with descriptive note, all set into a wood frame. The note of provenance reads: "This horseshoe was found on water ravine, Bentenn-Reno Hill, near boundary fence in 1976 by Mr. Hank Weibert." The land is owned by Gilvert Bird-In-Hand, a Crow Indian.
