The Diploma signed by
George Washington and Henry Knox, dated May 5, 1784
The parchment diploma was engraved by Jacque Le Veau (1729-1786) Paris, the text by Robert Scot (1744-1823), Philadelphia, and presented to Frederick Frye at the meeting of the Cincinnati in Philadelphia. Document is cut and laid down, with some fading. The Washington signature moderately faded, but clear and legible. 13 1/2 x 21 in. The enameled insignia with green enameld wreath and leaves at tail, the head, tail feathers and talons enameled white, the eagle's eye is red, the motto in white enclosing green and blue medallion. 1 1/2 in.
PROVENANCE:
An original member of the Society of the Cincinnati, Henry Frye was the son of Col. James and Sarah Robey Frye, born in Andover, Massachusetts, June 9, 1760. He married in Salem, Massachusetts, Margaret Gardner Mackey in 1789. He served as an Ensign in the 1st Massachusetts from 1781-1783, Captain of the 1st United States Artillerists and Engineers from 1794-1802. He eventually became Commandant of the Military post on Governors Island in New York Harbor and served with the rank of Captain during the War of 1812. He died in New York.
