<B>A Compass Inscribed From General Philip Sheridan to H. C. Koch</B></I> This compass was a gift from Union General Philip Sheridan to his topographical engineer H. C. Koch. Koch, an architect from Milwaukee noted the presentation by having it engraved on the reverse as follows:<BR><BR>This compass <BR><BR>Was given me<BR><BR>By<BR><BR>Gen. P. H. Sheridan on Jan. 3rd 1863 <BR><BR>After the Battle<BR><BR> Of Stone River. <BR><BR> H. C. Koch<BR><BR>Henry C. Koch was born in Germany and came to the United States to work as an architect. He enlisted with the 24th Wisconsin Volunteers and served as General Sheridan's topographical engineer making sketches and maps throughout the war. He lived at Milwaukee after the war, designed over 700 buildings including Milwaukee City Hall.<BR><BR>This compass given to him by General Sheridan is made of brass and is missing the case cover. The glass is also broken giving evidence that this compass was used extensively during the war.<BR><BR> <B>Provenance:</B></I> <I>P.
