probably once part of an album, the group includes 18 ink-signed and 1 pencil-signed officers, plus another unknown, having either Brady or Beardsley Bros., Ithaca back marks. One more man in civilian dress is a former Company I. NCO. Fourteen of the officers carry swords.

The 137th NY was organized in August 1862 and mustered out in June 1865, having seen service in both theaters of war. Part of George S. Greene’s brigade at Gettysburg, the Oswego Regiment bore a particularly conspicuous role in the defense of Culp’s Hill considered in a recent Gettysburg Magazine article to have been absolutely essential to victory. The regiment later transferred west with the consolidated 12th/20th Corps and fought back-to-back engagements at Wauhatchie and Lookout Mountain, suffering over 120 killed and wounded. Under Slocum, the 137th endured a long summer’s hard marching interspersed with heavy fighting at Pine Knob, Kennesaw Mountain, and Peach Tree Creek, among other memorable battlefields. The 137th marched with Sherman and ended the war in the Carolinas.
