China, Qing Dynasty, (1644-1911). Intricately carved stone, the smooth sunken palette emptying into a crescent-shaped ink-pool, the top and one side carved with sinuous dragons amid swirling clouds, characteristic circular inclusions forming the 'pearls.' In addition to prizing quality stone for use as inkstones, the Chinese also appreciated carved stones as art objects. Large stones would be carved in the form of ink stones, not to be used, but to be collected. Such stone carvings were often commissioned and given as gifts. 13-1/2" x 11" x 4-1/2"H. Tiny chip on one side, minor roughness on underside, plus minor surface wear, else intact.
