A Castelli rectangular majolica plaque, with landscape and figure decoration depicting a man on a ho
A Castelli rectangular majolica plaque, with landscape and figure decoration depicting a man on a horse by a river, with two large trees in the foreground, figures in the middle distance with town in the far distance, late 17th/early 18th century 27cm x 21cm £1,500-2,000 Note: Castelli, a small town in the kingdom of Naples has been a seat of majolica potteries since the 16th century. There was a strong influence from Urbino but with a very different chromatic effect; the strong colouring of Urbino was replaced by low tones of yellow, buff,olive-green and greyish-blue which colours are dominate in all the panels offered. In the latter part of the 17th century century the industry at Castelli was carried on chiefly by members of the Grue and Gentili families (see two roundels, lots 44 and 45). The Victoria and Albert in London have a plate in their collection depicting vagrants in a landscape which is signed and dated Dr. Fran. Ants. Grue f. Castelli A.D. 1732. This appears to be the closest parallel in terms of subject matter. the plaques certainly seem from their dimensions and similar subject matter to be part of a series. Further evidence of this is suggested by late inscribed numbers verso "2, 4, 6, 8"
