A whimsical and finely painted porcelain figural tobacco jar, depicting a rotund, elderly gentleman in a floral house robe with fur trim, holding a folded newspaper titled THE TIMES in both hands. His stern, exaggerated features and gold-rimmed spectacles give him a caricatured, dignified air, characteristic of humorous figural jars from the late 19th century. The lid is formed by the figure’s head, which lifts to reveal a hollow interior, likely used to store tobacco. Robes are adorned with stylized pink floral motifs, trimmed in iron red and gilt. Gold decoration appears on the eyeglasses, cuffs, tassels, and sash. The figure’s expression, attire, and posture gently mock the image of a grumpy intellectual or retired gentleman immersed in current affairs.Light wear to footring, impressed with model number "2557".While unmarked, the model is very much in the style of late 19th-century German or Bohemian factories such as Hertwig & Co., Galluba & Hofmann, Possibly Carl Thieme (Dresden) or Heubach. Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold "as-is", refer to our T&C.Helios Auctions does not ship in-house. A list of recommended shippers will be provided.
