<B>A NORTHERN CHEYENNE BEADED HIDE BABY CARRIER<BR></B></I><BR>c. 1880<B><BR></B></I> <BR>sinew sewn and lane-stitched in numerous shades of opaque and translucent beads, decorated with alternating triangular devices, mounted on wood slats with semi-spherical brass tack decoration, trimmed with brass and glass bead tassels terminating in hawk bells and cowrie shells; accompanied by a photograph of a young woman on horseback holding this baby carrier<BR><BR>The poster/photograph accompanying this lot was taken by Christian Barthelmess in 1889 in a camp just west of Fort Keough, Montana, on the Yellowstone River. Pictured on the far left is Stump Horn, one of the Cheyenne scouts who served with Lt. Edward Casey, 22nd Infantry, U.S. Army. Huffman, Photographer of the American West</B></I>, Settlers West Galleries, Tuscon, p. 138.<BR><I><BR>Length: 41 inches</B></I> <B>Condition Report:</B> Overall, the condition of the cradleboard is very good. There is usual wear and light soiling. The extensive beadwork appears to be intact. The wood slats have abraded paint in small areas. A sliver of wood 2 inches by 1/3 inch is missing from the rear of the left slat. There are approximately 2 small holes on the front of the right slat. One bell is missing from the fringe along the sides. Another bell is broken leaving half of the bell still tied on. The cloth lashed to the wood slats and used as backing for the beaded cradle is moderately stained and soiled. There is a one-inch tear in the fabric along the top right side. There is no apparent restoration. The accompanying photo is mounted on foam board which has numerous dings on all four edges.
