The characteristic horn grips with hooked pommel, the leather-covered wooden scabbard mounted in finely chiseled and nielloed silver in flowering vine motifs. The heirloom blade lightly curved and bifullered, etched with a sun in splendor at the right forte and a moon and star with inscription at the left. Mid 19th century. Such shashkas were made in Tbilisi by a variety of Caucasian craftsmen. They were popular among officers of the Imperial Russian Army of the South. Leather probably replaced, age darkening to blade. Overall length 93 cm.
