The grip carved of a single section of walrus, delicately inlaid in elegant vinework in gold and silver, with filigreed and gilded silver ferrule. The scabbard composed of elaborately filigreed and gilded silver with nielloed borders, set with large walrus panels inlaid in fine gold vinework en suite with the grip. The reverse engraved and nielloed overall in flowering vine motifs with geometrical borders. The straight, double-edged blade with triple fullers o either side terminating above the acute tip, the forte struck with a maker’s mark. Mid 19th century. In the Caucasus, the importance of the kindjal was a weapon as well as the primary accoutrement of personal prestige. Overall length 49.5 cm length.
