A.C.Begay (1932-2010) Navajo Sheep Herder Painting
Featured in this lot is this original painting done by Navajo artist Arthur C. Begay (1932-2010) circa late 20th century. Arthur C. Begay was a well-known Navajo artist who created vibrant paintings showing everyday Navajo life, typically set against the renowned vistas of Monument Valley and Shiprock in New Mexico. His most remarkable historical element is that he studied under famed illustrator Norman Rockwell in the 1950s, which had a big impact on his style and technique, distinguishing his work with a distinct blend of traditional Navajo themes and a more polished, realistic approach. This piece shows a Navajo woman walking goats and sheep through a grassy valley. Large fluffy clouds loom overhead. She is wearing brightly colored necklaces, a red shirt and a long blue dress. The piece is signed in the bottom right reading, "Arthur C. Begay" in black paint. It is matted once with a red / brown matting paper and sits in a dark wood frame. The piece shows good condition overall with little wear present to the frame and none present to the artwork. The visible artwork measures 4 7/8" L x 4" W, while the entire piece measures 9 1/8" L x 8 1/4" W x 1 3/8" D. It has a total weight of 14 ounces.
