From the ancient Eastern Holy Roman Empire, ca 600 to 900 AD. Large cast section, most likely coming from a polycandelon (a large fixture used for holding multiple candles/oil lamps usually in a cathedral). Top section with circular openwork bronze with four suspension loops and incised decorations; lower section is Christian cross of early form, each section ending with rounded tips. Mounted on custom base and quite attractive example! Section itself measures 7"H x 4-1/4"W. Fragmentary, as shown.

Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Estate, Denver, CO acquired in the early 1960s.
