A Break in the Pattern
Cherry, brass rod, shellac, polyurethane
8" x 8" x 2"

Theme Statement
Carving a ginkgo leaf motif in the structural pattern of a tessellation was a departure for me. In turn, the tessellation begins to unravel, departing from its pattern, losing its structure.
The ripples a falling drop creates on water inspired the form I turned for this sculpture. The simple depression in the back is a reverse of its corresponding protrusion on the front, generating a wave-like form, dispersing ginkgo leaves.

Artist Statement
Dixie Biggs has been a full-time studio woodturner/artist since 1989. Having a degree in agriculture from the University of Florida and a love of gardening, much of her work incorporates a botanical theme. She is best known for her meticulously-carved, leaf wrapped vessels. Although each piece begins on the lathe, she sees this as a starting point for further development. She finds a great deal of inspiration in the shapes, textures and simple beauty found in nature. “What I strive to evoke in my pieces is a sense of tranquility that a quiet walk in the woods can bring.”
