A.Bechtler $5 Restrike PR63 PCGS. K-30, High R.7. Struck from the same die pair used to produce K-29, but with a proof finish. The rare K-29 was a circulation issue struck during the 1840s or 1850s. The dies survived, and came into the possession of Henry Chapman circa 1908. He could not resist the temptation of polishing the dies and producing a handful of proofs. These proofs are from moderately rusted dies, and are further identified by a radial die crack from the rim to the second A in CARATS. Flashy and fully struck with faint hairlines and a small lintmark above the F in RUTHERFORD. K-30 is extremely rare. A search of our archives fails to locate a previous Heritage-auctioned example. Mentioned on page 351 of the 2008 Guide Book.
From The Stephen L.
