Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Thailand), Ban Chaing, ca. 4th to 2nd Century B.C. Bivalve stone mould and axe blade. Ban Chiang smiths used this to mould spearheads and bronze axes before beating to increase hardness and to work in details. The bronze ax was a more efficient weapon than a polished stone one from the Stone Age. Bronze arrowheads and fishhooks were also better tools than those made of wood or animal bone.

Each side of mold measures 7"H x 6-3/4"W. Bronze axe head in in shape of crescent. 6-1/2"L x 5"T. Stable cracks in stone mold; ax has well-worn patina and heavy corrosion, as shown.

Provenance: Mold - ex-Sarkisian Estate, Denver, CO; Axe Blade - ex-D. Smith Collection.
