<B>A BLACKFEET BEADED CLOTH DRESS<BR></B></I><BR>c. 1900<BR> <BR>decorated across the yoke with bands of beadwork in various shades of glass seed beads, trimmed with bead and cowrie shell fringe, silk ribbon on the hem <BR><BR>Cotton cloth dresses became increasingly popular around the turn of the 20th century. This may have been due to a scarcity of suitable hides. More likely, the cloth dress provided greater comfort on hot summer days. A survey of historic photographs from the early 20th century attests to the popularity of cloth dresses amongst the Blackfeet and other Northern Plains tribes.<BR><I><BR>Length: 45 inches</B></I> <B>Condition Report:</B> Overall good. Fabric moderate wear and soiling and heavy fading. Beadwork intact. Approx. 14 beaded hide fringe elements missing and approx. 10 hide fringe elements missing beads. Silk ribbon bottom trim with 50% loss.
