Albert Arnold was the trader at Tohatchi Trading Post from 1913 to 1949 - a long tenure for a trader at the same location. In 1946 he became partners with Al Tietzen who then bought Arnold’s share in 1949. Tohatchi is located 28 miles north of Gallup at the base of the Chuska Mountains. It was just off of one of two paved highways on the reservation until the 60s. It was a busy post for years and surrounded by a large Navajo population.
In 1960 there were about 70 trading posts within 30 miles of Gallup. That was a long distance by horse or wagon. Not so when roads and pickup trucks came to the reservation. By 1970 there were less than 10. The Navajo word for Tohatchi Trading is Tóhaach’ἰ—Water is scratched out. There is a creek bed near the trading post that runs from the Chuska Mountains. Water can be found by digging in the creek bed, usually by hand.
