ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 6.75, Cotchford Farm letterhead, 1949. Letter to a gentleman. In part: “Not only do you know all about films, but you are the only person I know who knows all about films…Albert Rutherston (see Who’s Who, if you’ve never heard of him) has a wife Marjory who ran a furniture shop for some years up to 1942, by which time Hitler had killed it. She wants to get to work again, and wondered if there was any opening in the film world for a furniture expert—as I think she can claim to be. She asked me, who knows nothing about such things, so I said I would ask you…I could pass on your answer quite easily, whether it was a decided ‘no,’ or something a little more encouraging…How are you, and how is your boy? Mine got out of the Army last July, after 4 years in the Middle East and Italy, went back to Cambridge for a year, and is now looking for a job.” A rusty paperclip mark to the upper border and a few mild creases, otherwise fine condition. The Rutherston he mentions was a painter and illustrator. His son, Christopher Robin, upon whom the Pooh character was based, he wanted to join the military when WWII broke out but failed the medical exam; the elder Milne used his influence to secure him a position with the second training battalion of the Royal Engineers.
