A 19th century stained wood settle, the plain upright back with brass rule edging, inset brass plaque engraved "Great Western Steamship Company Bristol 1838 Sirius" and a vignette of the ship, with a solid seat and full width brass faced drawer, with prominent ring handles 135cm wide, 110cm high, 47cm deep The Sirius was built by Messrs Menzies of Leith and has the distinction of being the first steamship to cross the Atlantic, reaching New York a few hours before the Great Western in 1838. She famously had to revert to burning timber from her superstructure having run out of coal; unlike the Great Western the Sirius had not been built to cross the Atlantic. £800-1,200
