A 1930's steamed birch Famulus chair which by repute belonged to Virginia Woolf, with curved spring back and seat on curved arms which bend through 180 degrees to form sledge feet, Rd.No. 809095. These chairs were designed by J.P. Hully and made by P.E. Gane Ltd. of College Green, Bristol. Provenance:- Upon the death of Leonard Woolf, Monk's House was bequeathed to Sussex University. The vendor's late husband was in charge of the University's horticulture at this time and was put in charge of restoring the gardens. On reporting a shed in the garden was very dilapidated and contained furniture with woodworm he was instructed to burn the shed and contents. At this time the vendor asked if she could keep this chair and restore it. Apparently Virginia Woolf bought some of these chairs in the late 1930's and gave one to Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, which now resides in The Studio at Charleston. £100-150
