4pp. letter from David F. Mansfield of the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, Company F. Accompanied by cover. Written in pencil and datelined ''Camp near Warrenton Station Oct 30 / 61,'' letter reads in part: ''…Friend Charlie I have somewhat unexpectedly become apprized…of the gratifying intelligence that you 'still live'. Believe me his emphatic assertion of this fact has entirely dissipated the gloomy doubts and foreboding I had previously entertained…it has been no easy job for me since April last…I wish Charlie you could be upon this very spot with us now with a good double barrelled shot gun. You might enjoy yourself hugely. since halting at 1 P.M. upon this spot we have caught at least 100 Rabbits with our hands, actually running them down. And some 50 Quails…One flew so near on that he hit my check and I reversed the blow by pulling his head off…I have to acknowledge myself completely nonplussed so far as the probable movements of the Army is concerned. it appears that even Corps Commanders do not know what is to happen till they are told to move…Yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock we were notified by order from Corp Hd Qrs that as we should doubtless remain some time at that place. the men if they liked might erect stockades and make themselves comfortable. Yet at 4 a.m. this morning we struck tents and moved out here…'' David F. Mansfield mustered into Company F on 28 August 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 January 1863 and discharged on 1 June 1865. The 91st Pennsylvania saw action at Perryville, Thompson's Station, Chickamauga, Mossy Creek, Waynesboro, Bentonville and several other engagements throughout Tennessee. Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Moderate toning and separation at creases, otherwise excellent condition.
