ALS from William W. Lockwood of the 86th Indiana Infantry, Company E. Letter sans dateline reads in part: ''…I visited Joe Newton last Sunday He is in Wood's division…Joe has charge of the entire medical department of the Regiment which…keeps him very busy. The 78th has been much affected by sickness and cannot muster more than 150 men able for duty out of the 1000 that left South bend little more than 3 months ago, in fact all the new Regiments are reduced more than one half by disease, 7 men have died from our company since we left Drainsville…We have plenty to do here our brigade goes on Picket one day in three forages the next and drills the next…picketing is very disagreeable sometimes, the other night it commenced raining about dark and turned very cold, the men had to stand in line of battle out in the storm all night…one man became so chilled from the affects of it that he died next day. Our pickets and foragers are continually harassed by the enemy, the night our regiment was out they captured 54 of our cavalry outpost under cover of a flag of truce, one of our men was killed, our company was detailed to bury him which they did throwing him into a hole without even a wooden box to protect his body… Such is the life and such the death and burial of a soldier…'' William W. Lockwood mustered into Company E on 4 September 1862, and was transfered into the Veteran Reserve Corps on 10 January 1865. With the 86th, Lockwood served at Perryville, Stone's River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Resaca, Dallas, New Hope Church, Kenesaw, Jonesboro and several other engagements. Ink letter runs 2pp. and measures approximately 8'' x 10''. Heavy toning and scattered soiling; some paper loss at creases. Overall, very good condition.
