4pp. letter from Sergeant Charles B. Palmer of the 83rd Ohio Infantry, Company E, to his sister. Written in ink and datelined ''Benton Barracks, Mo. / Oct. 11, 1863,'' letter reads in part: ''…I am anxious to hear from you and everything will interest me from Cinci…I feel contented at staying away from the regiment I could pass the time very agreeably. I have about enough to do to keep me busy most of the time and can always go away to St Louis or anywhere I wish…Our office is very comfortable. We have a sleeping room by ourselves and for a soldier fare very well indeed. What I miss most is society. This never seeing a young female month in and month out is a mighty bad fix to be in…I wish much that I was acquainted in St Louis. This is altogether too lonely a life. Have you heard anything of Capt. Seflar Alle? I have not heard from him since I left Cinci…Tell Ady he should write to me. He is not acting the way that he should. If Jim could spare the time I should like to hear from him very much. You may want to know why Bill did not write to you about the time I left Cinci. He told me he had written to his sister Jane I think and was going to write to you when he recd an answer. Write to me soon a long letter. I shall be much disappointed if I do not get a letter in a few days…'' Charles Palmer mustered into Company E on 5 August 1862. He mustered out as a First Sergeant on 24 July 1865 at Galveston, Texas. The 83rd Ohio saw action at Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, Port Gibson, Champion's Hill, Vicksburg and Fort Blakely. Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Minimal soiling and slight separation at folds, otherwise near fine condition.
