ALS from Corporal Philip J. Kramer of the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry, Company I. Datelined Camp Cadwalader, Pennsylvania, 21 October 1861, letter reads in part: ''…I have not done one days work in all since I left home. I am getting tired of this place. We are Pend up in a space of about eight acres with a pail fence around it about 12 feet high. Since the Regiments have all gone to the front we only get about half as much as we could eat, but I hope there is better time to come. It is all together the quartermasters felt we are aware that the old scoundrels sells it they are giving the condemned another overhauling and they are picking out a good many. and I hope I may be one of them. I do not care where they put me, so that I get out of this place. It has been over a week since I got a letter from home. When you write you can let me know how they are. Let me know all the times and fashions and write as soon as convenient…'' Kramer mustered into Company I on 16 September 1861 as a Corporal. He deserted on 27 December 1862. The 82nd Pennsylvania saw action at Williamsburg, Yorktown, Seven Pines, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Petersburg, Opequan and Cedar Creek. 2pp. ink letter measures 5'' x 8''.
