7th Voyage Of Sinbad Harryhausen Stone Face
7th Voyage Of Sinbad Harryhausen Stone Face - Ray Harryhausen and his astonishing "Dynamation" stop motion special effects created some of the most famous and spectacular creatures and action sequences in movie history. From the classic 7th Voyage of Sinbad" (1958), this is one of the scale-model "Stone Face" pieces as the ones seen at the entrance of the Island of Colossas (aka Island of the Cyclops) in the beginning of the film when Sinbad and his crew are shipwrecked on the island. it is here that they first encounter the massive imposing Stone Face, which they describe as "the mark of Satin himself" and coming from "an ancient civilization". It marks and guards the entrance to the tomb of treasures, (also guarded by the Giant Cyclops as well as a fire breathtaking Dragon), and is the gateway to the Valley of The Cyclops, where the deadly two-headed Roc Bird also lives. It is here that they first encounter the Cyclops as well as the evil Sokurah the Magician. We see the dramatic Stone Face entrance again when Sinbad and crew are forced to return to the island to find a special ingredient to save the Princess Parisa, and again at the end of the film when they do final battle with the Cyclops and Dragon. Several Stone Face pieces were made and used, depending on the special effects sequence, be it "background" for the mattes of Sinbad and crew, or of Sokurah the Magician running out of the cave, or the Cyclops coming out of the mouth, or close-ups of the Face itself as Sinbad and his crew's POV, or of a close low-angle shot of the Dragon getting his fatal blow with Sinbad's massive catapult arrow at the end of the film. The scale of the pieces depended on what it was used for, so several were made, as well those used as a maquette to standardize the various models. The Stone Face was also augmented in shape and form by both telescopic and extreme wide-angle lenses depending on the perspective that Harryhausen was going for, and the nose, forehead and eyebrows were also augmented in shape from the original piece with actual matte-artist drawn layovers to extend the face's form to accommodate and add details such as roots, green plants, dirt and stone to create the illusion of it being extremely "ancient". This set piece comes from the celebrated collection of Jerry Neeley, well-known film historian, writer, collector and owner of the famous "Jerry's Video" in Los Feliz, CA. Customers, collectors and throngs of industry people would come from around the world to talk to Jerry, whose knowledge and memory were encyclopedic and also visit his collection. The Stone Face also includes a Letter of Provenience from Jerry Neely's widow and co-owner of his various video and memorabilia shops. (Made of plaster, the Stone Mouth is approx 12"x13". It is extremely heavy, and because of its weight and delicacy will require special handling charges.
