ALEXANDER L. BAIRD. 1) Scottish tam decorated w/ “79 NY”, 9TH AC badge, NY state seal badge & thistle insignia. Knit construction w/ sewn brown cotton lining. CONDITION: very good overall w/ sewn silk edging fraying. 2) Scottish dirk, maker marked “HARTENSTEIN / BROOKLYN”. Well made blade measures about 12", matching dinner knife & fork, all German silver mounted w/ yellow glass stones. CONDITION: good overall, has seen use but lg. blade retains most of its finish, good makers marking, sheath is missing its tip, fork is missing ferrule, scuffed, added brass riveted bracket & belt loop. 3) Wartime albumin photograph of four 79th NY Highlanders wearing similar tams. Photograph is by “J. Wilkes 165 8Th Avenue”. CONDITION: good to very good overall. 8.25" x 10.5" Mounting board has longitudinal bend on right side unaffecting image. 4) 13" x 17" vignetted discharge/reenlistment of 1st Sgt. Alexander L Baird, “Company A 79th Regiment Highlanders New York State Militia Volunteers” October 9, 1864 at Peebles House, Virginia. CONDITION: fair to good overall, easily discernible & inscriptions, soiled, sm. reductions on left side unaffecting text, it is glued or taped along the edges to board. (02-14832/JS). $4,000-6,000.
