(6th N. Y. HEAVY ARTILLERY DURING THE MINE RUN CAMPAIGN)
An interesting letter written in pencil by Union Corp. William J. Laurence, 4pp. 8vo., "Camp of the 6th N. Y. Artillery, near Centreville, Virginia", Oct. 18, 1863 concerning the Mine Run Campaign, in part: "...the movement of troops and rumbling of wagons and artillery can be seen and heard night and day…the enemy seems to change his position very often; if Lee makes a stand at Bull Run, he will…get whipped badly…we broke up our camp near Culpeper…the 10th and commenced our march about 11 o'clock. We arrived at Rappahannock Station about noon…marched through Bull Run across Bull Run creek encamped near Centreville…the fighting at Manassas we could see as it was rather close on our rear. The retreat speaks well for General Meade as all was moving in good order…". A nice letter from a soldier who would be promoted to sergeant before the end of the war. Very good.
