645-008-006 Holo (Democratic Republic of Congo
Holo (Democratic Republic of Congo)
Standing Figure with Hands at Chin
Wood, metal, dikdik horn, cord, cloth
Height: 10 inches Width: 3 inches Depth: 2 7/8 inches

The suave, withdrawn expression and restrained gestures, along with the rather long, triangular face, place this figure as Holo in origin. This is reinforced by the detailed, carefully rendered coiffure. The treatment of arms and shoulder blades as a continuous, attached unit is reminiscent of Suku sculpture, a closely related tradition. The function of the figure as a receptacle and effector of power is indicated by the added metal chain and dikdik horn, as well as by a small hole in the top center of the head and a rectangular compartment in the proper right abdomen which has been sealed with a metal plate. With a rich age and use patination, the condition of the figure is very good.

Provenance: David and Bonnie Ross, Indianapolis
Sotheby's

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
