Six General Winfield Scott Hancock Cartes de Visite. General Hancock was a distinguished Union General. Sitting on his horse at the front of his lines during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, it wasn't until the final stages of the fighting that Hancock thought he'd been hit with a tenpenny nail. In fact a mini ball had passed through the pommel of his saddle and carried the bullet, and bits of foreign matter, into his right thigh. He was transported by ambulance to Westminster, then Baltimore, then Philadelphia. By October, although the wound was still open, he was able to walk with a cane and resume command of the Second Corps. It was this sort of fortitude and loyalty that led President Grant to say: "Hancock stands the most conspicuous figure of all the general officers who did not exercise a separate command. He commanded a corps longer than any other one, and his name was never mentioned as having committed in battle a blunder for which he was responsible." This lot commemorates this man through six CDVs, all of which feature the man in his Union blues. The nicest of the six is a full standing shot of Hancock bearing the Anthony / Brady imprint on the verso. His hand is thrust in his jacket, and he stands with the authority and posture of a brave general. Something about Brady portraits seem to capture the inner essence of the individual being photographed. All are in fine or better condition; one Anthony / Brady example has light discoloration and stippling on the emulsion; pencil notations on verso of several; ink notations on recto of one; square corners; three with double lined gilt borders.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
