Lot of 6 Classic Science Fiction Fanzines from the 1940’s (and 1 from the 30’s!)
A nice 6-piece set of 1940’s science fiction fanzines focused on speculative fiction. Take a look at the very first issue of James V Taurasi’s Fantasy News from 1938, as you’ll likely never see it again (it’s that rare)!
Includes the following issues:
The Alchemist #2.2 (actually the 7th issue) Winter 1947, VF- condition: A fanzine edited by Charles Ford Hansen, Lew Martin and Roy V. Hunt (the Denver Triumvirate) in Denver with seven mimeographed issues between February 1940 and Winter 1947. Fantastic linoleum-block cover art by Roy V. Hunt. Features nonfiction by Bob (Wilson) Tucker ("Fandom Is Worthless"), Bob Peterson, Harry Warner Jr., Art Widner, Forrest J Ackerman (on Metropolis), Roy V. Hunt, Stanley Mullen, Chuck Hansen, et al. Also letters from Lew Martin, Gus Willmorth, A. Langley Searles, Rusty Hevelin, Donn Brazier, Joe (X.J.) Kennedy, Donald B. Thompson, and Tigrina. 54 pages, mimeo, wraparound
Fantasy Commentator #17 Winter 1948, VG: Arthur Langley Searles (1920-2009) edited and published 58 issues of The Fantasy Commentator between December 1943 and Summer 2004. It is, arguably, the best scholarly fanzine ever produced. Its essays and reviews rival the best critical journals of any era. This issue features nonfiction from Searles, David H. Keller ("Unwritten Books"), Thyril L. Ladd (on Ray Cummings), George T. Wetzel ("Something About Vampires"), Darrell C. Richardson (on "Lee Robinet"), William H. Evans ("Fantasy in All-American Fiction"), and Sam Moskowitz (Immortal Storm part 10). Poetry by George Sterling ("A Wine of Wizardry"), wonderfully illustrated by Joseph Krucher. Book reviews by Paul Spencer (on James Branch Cabell), Moskowitz (on Olaf Stapledon), and Searles (on Mervyn Wall, et al.)
Fantasy Fiction Field #42 August 2 1941, Good+: Long running mimeographed fanzine published/edited by Julius Unger between late October 1940 and December 1945. This was a short weekly fanzine with 215 total issues. Issue 42 features a pasted on b/w photograph of fan Allen Class, receiver of the “Denvention Award.”
Fantasy News #1 June 26 1938, VG: This early 2-sided (1-sheet) newszine was published by published/edited by the legendary James V Taurasi. Taurasi was one of the creators of science fiction fandom as we know it. He was part of the leadership of the First Worldcon, one of the originators of New Fandom, founding member of the QSFL and the GNYSFL. He was generally on the opposite side of fan feuds from the Futurians. He was active in fandom from the mid-1930s to the mid-60s. ULTRA RARE!!
The Futurian #8 (Vol 3 #2) Spring 1940, Good+ (detached front cover): A fanzine focused on speculative fiction, published in the UK by J. Michael Rosenblum before the War. Last issue (replaced by The "Pseudo-Futurian!" after WW2).
Tympani #21 Mar 15 1948, VG+: A newszine published by Robert Stein in Milwaukee and Redd Boggs in Minneapolis.

Thank you for your interest in our auction! Please note that we will be running this auction on multiple auction hosting sites. So, your actual bid, may not be the winning bid.
