This lot comprises six bottles of 1989 vintage Château Pichon-Baron from the Pauillac appellation in Bordeaux.

The Pauillac appellation produces some of the world’s most highly-prized and expensive red wines. Situated to the northwest of the city of Bordeaux, near the Atlantic coast, its vineyards are located on dried-out swamplands. Vines take root in gravel dunes with subterranean clay lens. Here, Cabernet Sauvignon can develop a unique depth of taste and power, so the grape variety therefore makes up a large percentage of the Pauillac cuvées. The tannin-rich, powerful, concentrated wines require longer bottle-ageing in order to differentiate and reveal their taste. The Classification of 1855 put the vineyards of the Lafite-Rothschild and Latour estates ahead of the pack, awarding them Premier cru status. Mouton-Rothschild has also belonged to the club since 1973. In second place are the Deuxième crus of Pichon-Longueville-Baron and Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse de Lalande. For decades, however, experts have judged them as being at least on a par with their Premier cru counterparts. This is also the case for numerous other top wines from this appellation.

1989 was, like 1988 and 1990, a great vintage in Bordeaux. The continuously warm weather allowed an early harvest and the wines contain a high proportion of tannins and alcohol strength. They usually already taste wonderful, but can develop further if stored well.

The 1989 vintage Pichon-Baron was rated 95 points by Robert Parker in 1997. James Suckling awarded the wine the same score for Wine Spectator in 2010.

Château Pichon Baron

Château Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville, also known as Château Pichon Baron, is a famous winery in the Pauillac appellation on the border of Saint-Julien, which is considered by wine experts as one of the best regions in Bordeaux. In the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, it was awarded Deuxième Cru and thus belongs to the second-best class of Grand Cru estates in Médoc. Until the mid-19th century, the estate belonged, along with Château Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, to Château Pichon-Longueville, before it was divided into two estates by its owner Baron Joseph de Pichon-Longueville, who kept the smaller part that would eventually become Château Pichon Baron. Since 1987 the estate is owned by the French insurance company AXA Millésime. Until 2000 it was managed by Jean-Michel Cazes, who also owns Château Lynch-Bages. Today the estate is managed by Christian Seely.

Château Pichon Baron has a vineyard area of 73 hectares, with 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 35 % Merlot, 4 % Cabernet Franc and 1 % Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 30 years. Approximately 420,000 bottles of wine are produced each year, 40 % of which are sold as the estate’s second wine Les Tourelles de Longueville.
