ALS by John S. Tompkins of the 56th New York Infantry, Company E. Written in ink and datelined ''Yorktown Dec 3rd 1862,'' letter reads in part: ''…I was very glad to hear from you. I am well at present and hope you are the same. I received a letter from Charly last night. He says they are all well home. You wrote in your letter that you have had plenty of fruit this season. How I should like to happen along there just for a little while. I think I should make them apples suffer, I am very much obliged to you for the dried fruit you sent me. I have stewed some of the black Caps and they are first rate and I suppose the others is just as good. There is nothing new here. It is a very quiet place. We was reviewed yesterday by Gen Dix. Everything passed off very pleasant. I suppose Samuel is buying and selling as usual. Tell him to kiss all the girls for me because I am so far away I cannot attend to them myself. I received a letter from Jim Vail. He says they are all well and kicking around. We had a snow storm here but the snow soon melted away. It is warm and pleasant here…The nights is somewhat cold with a little frost now and then, but I suppose you are having quite cold weather up there now a days. Charley says that Father has almost put out one of his eyes. By his tell, it must be pretty bad, but he may regain his sight yet. Now I must draw this letter to a close. Write as often as you can give my love to Samuel and the children…'' Tompkins mustered into Company E as a First Sergeant and mustered out as a First Lieutenant. The 56th New York Infantry saw action at Yorktown, Williamsburg and Seven Pines. 3pp. ink letter measures 5'' x 8''. Some dampstaining and foxing, as well as a bite at one crease. Excellent condition.
