5410 FINE NAPOLEON III DESK BY PAUL SORMANI. (1867-1877). Signed on the lock plate: Paul Sormani; 10 r Charlot, Paris. A fine bombe shaped writing desk with hand chased ormolu mounts and marquetry and parquetry inlays, the whole raised on cabriole legs. Gallery with six serpentine drawers, one with inkbottle, and pigeon holes. Mixed exotic woods. Note: Paul Sormani was born in Venice (Canzo?) in 1817. In 1847 he married Ursule-Marie-Phillipine Bouvaist. He won a bronze medal in Exposition of 1849. During the second half of the century he continued to exhibit at International shows, and again won a First Class medal in the Exposition of 1855. In 1858 he expanded his business and produced articles modeled after 18th century maitres ebenistes. He copied pieces from Versailles for elite families such as the Vanderbilts. In 1867 he set up shop at 10 rue Charlot in Paris. Provenance: purchased by Fred J. Schuler in 1974 from MGM galleries in Springfield, Mass. 42 (106.7cm) h., 44 (111.8cm) w., 23 (58.4cm) d. Condition: veneer losses, especially on inside canted edges of the legs. Estimate: $7,000- 14,000.
