The woman with a white scarf over her shoulders. Inscribed on backs of canvases in ink, Painted by Azel Capen 1839. The artist is described in Who Was Who in American Art as a mid-19th century portrait painter active in Maine. Both similarly framed in 3 (7.6cm) veneered wood frames. Work: 26 1/2 x 22 (67.3cm x 55.9cm) each. Framed: 31 x 27 (78.7cm x 68.6cm) each. Condition: some buckling in canvases, some losses to frames. Estimate: $800-1000.
