The Loire is a long river with diverse geological, geographic and climatic influences, grape varieties, wine styles and wine-growing traditions. The headwaters above Orléans are the breeding grounds for the famous Sauvignon blanc white wines, whilst the middle reaches, including the Touraine and Anjou, are dominated by Chenin blanc and delicate red growths made from Cabernet franc and Gamay. The lower reaches are Muscadet territory, where the Melon grape is predominant.

In the upper reaches of the Loire, the small appellation of Pouilly-Fumé produces some of the very best Sauvignon blanc white wines, characterized by chalk and flint and the alternation between continental coolness and heat. The best of them oscillate between flavorful fullness and breathtaking elegance and finesse. In short: the famous fruity taste of the Sauvignon blanc is transcended by minerality and complexity.

The 1988 vintage Baron de Ladoucette was rated 88 points by Wine Spectator.
