Jade has always held a special place in Chinese culture. From ancient times its value has been considered to be greater than gold or silver. Beginning in the Neolithic period, the stone was carved into shapes such as discs (bi) or square tubes (cong) and placed on the body of the deceased within the tomb. Believed to have special protective powers, jade was thought to preserve the body from decomposition as well as to protect it from evil spirits. Stunning Hong Shan Culture Jade Carving, masterfully carved in deep green jade over 5000 years ago! Amazingly carved in a time period in history that precedes the invention of metal tools. It is theorized that the Hong Shan culture used animal bones and powdered abrasives to carve and smooth their jade. The color of this jade is diagnostic evidence of its great age. Qin forms on and in the jade from coming in contact with tomb earth, its contents and moisture. The color of the mineralization represents what the jade rested on or near while in the tomb. If the Qin is black, it laid near silver. If it the color of the Qin is red or brown, the jade laid near steel or blood.
